The way the controller flashes on standby might be irritating during lengthy play sessions, but it is easy to fix. You can replace the white indicator light with a more standard green one, or you can tape over the light using any contrasting color of tape. These two options are not difficult to do and will make your game time much more comfortable. This article will teach you how to fix a flashing white PS4 controller so that it does not bother you during long gaming sessions. The article also includes tips about taping over lights on controllers so that they don’t flash while playing games.
The white light flashes to indicate that the controller is on standby. It also flashes while charging up the battery, but it can easily be mistaken for an error if you are paying attention to your game and not to the controller. Making changes to your controller is not difficult, but you need to be careful because certain parts of the controller may get hot when charging.
One of the solutions we will cover is the PS4 Controller Flashing White Light problem. This problem occurs more often than not and many people like myself like to experiment with finding solutions. Here we’ll show you five different ways that work for us and we hope that they will work for you as well. If it doesn’t, keep reading! We’ve got more options for you below:
#1 Remove Batteries
We’ll start with the most simple of fixes that you can try. Your fix is just to remove and replug your PS4 controller’s batteries and see if it resolves the flashing white light issue. This is a common fix for this problem and we suggest you give it a try! If it works, then great! You do not have to go on any further. If not, read on for more options!
This method is normally used when your PS4 Controller Flashing White Light problem shows no signs after turning off your console and leaving it turned off for several hours or overnight. Once your console has been turned off for several hours, you can try following these steps:
- Opening the back panel of your console in a way that you can access the battery compartment in a way to change it in a safe setting.
- Changing the batteries.
- Reattaching the back panel to your console and plugging in your controller to test it.
#2 Remove Batteries, Reinsert, Put On Wrist Strap
This fix is a combination of steps number one and number three. This method is extremely similar to the above but with a very important difference. Step one involves taking out your PS4 controller’s batteries entirely and then putting them back in after you have turned off your console for several hours or more. Step three suggests that you leave the controller on so that the flashing white light won’t come back when you reconnect it to your PS4. Instead of doing that, you can put on the wrist strap on your controller to prevent unintentional disconnects. This method is useful if you are playing games with online multiplayer or are simply tired of the flashing white light problem completely.
#3 Fix PS4 Controller Flashing White Light With A Deoxit
One fix that very few people know about is applying Deoxit, a contact cleaner, to your PS4 Controller’s connection port at the end of an extension cord. The purpose of this method is to clean out any dirt or foreign matter that may be obstructing your connector port. Hardware for the Deoxit extension cord is very easy to come by. The most common place would be at your local hardware store. You can also get Deoxit from websites such as Amazon. Keep in mind that you have to buy a high-grade version of Deoxit which is rated as being safe to use with electronics, especially your PS4 Controller.
After purchasing the extension cord and contact cleaner, you will simply attach them together and plug them in so that your controller’s connection port is straight into the extension cord. From there, you will squeeze some of the contact cleaners onto your PS4 controller’s connector port until it flows out of the other end of the extension cord. There are different versions of Deoxit so you may have to look closely at their instructions to see which way is right for your version.
After waiting several hours or overnight, you can reconnect your PS4 controller to test if it has successfully fixed your flashing white light problem.
#4 Fix Ps4-Controller Flashing White Light With Spray Cleaner
This method requires only spray cleaner and a small number of paper towels or rags. First, your PS4 controller must be powered off. If it is not, you will simply shut the system off and restart it. Once you turn off your console, you can proceed to run through these steps:
- Open the back panel of your console in a way that you can access the connection port in a way to spray cleaner into it.
- Spray cleaner onto the connection port of your PS4 controller until most of it has gone into the connection port itself.
- Close your console’s back panel and leave it unplugged for several hours to ensure that the spray cleaner has dried.
- Restart your console to see if this method has fixed your flashing white light problem!
#5 Fix Ps4 Controller Flashing White Light With Denatured Alcohol
If the first method didn’t work for you, there’s always another option! You can instead use Denatured Alcohol which is also available at hardware stores. We recommend only using the Ethanol-free version of this solution.
You can also tape over the light or add tape to the sides of the controller using any contrasting color. The advantage of this option is that you can simply remove the tape when you want to play with a clear view of your controller’s lights, and then put it back on if you want to keep it covered up. When you are done, put the screws back in their original holes and put the controller back together. Then play some games!
Your controller’s indicator lights may also go dim if you do not use them often. If they become dim, it could be because your electronics are searching for a signal from the USB cable as it charges. In this case, simply use the controller to make the lights turn on and off a few times.
You can also tape over the lights to make them less visible while playing games. This will not affect your PS4’s ability to charge up your controllers, and it is a good idea if you don’t want to accidentally press the PS button while playing. It is also good for people who have sensitive eyes and do not want the bright light from the LEDs to distract them.

Tips and Warnings:
Replacing indicator lights requires some caution; if replacing a single light, avoid removing both at once. If anything goes wrong while replacing one LED light, you will know which one is broken and can replace it easily. When removing screws, make sure they don’t get lost; you will need them later to hold your controller together again after adding new indicator lights.
Use a paper towel and a light amount of spray lubricant to clean the holes around the old lights; too much lubricant could damage the shell. Screw the new lights in gently; if it feels like it is hard to screw in or like you might break something then it is probably not tight enough. Take your time and make sure that the screws are properly aligned.
Avoid touching metal parts while charging; they can get quite hot! If you want to remove a metal cover, wait at least an hour after charging your controller before touching any metal parts.
